In Closing: I really, really wanted to say something about austerity last week and it didn’t happen (how could they have looked at this chart and not suspected an error??); this only works if every single person has a fully charged smart phone with texting and nothing bad happens to the cell towers; Go West; not much; yeah, people at the low end having a living wage probably would help the economy (nice side effect, might make young people need student loans less); and now under 250 calories.

Just a reminder, my ideas for tax simplification include:
- Make the standard deduction equal to the poverty line. Nobody will be “taxed into poverty” ever again.
- Cap itemized deductions at 3 or 4 times that. Most people will never itemize anyway.
- AMT is now obsolete, so get rid of it.
- Adjust the brackets accordingly. I’m sure the IRS has policy wonks who can do this in a long weekend.
- Add a handful of “front page” deductions everyone can take over and above the standard or itemized deductions. These should be really important things. I suggest health insurance premiums, adoption expenses, charitable giving, and mass transit expenses.

Ok, I have a soft spot for Bruno Mars. Sure, this one is a lot of “noodling on the piano being sad about getting dumped” and isn’t that Adele’s shtick? But listen a little more closely and you’ll hear far more complex harmonies (seventh chords, secondary dominants, and deceptive cadences oh my!), and actual use of volume beyond the master fader.
